Yesterday, Adda Girl Education Foundation celebrated International Women's Day (IWD) with female counselors and teachers from 30 government schools in Gombe metropolis. Hannatu Ahmed Yaro, a seasoned gender expert, led the conversation where counselors spoke about issues of School Related Gender Based Violence #SRGBV they come across every day. During the beeakout sessions, the participants were divided into four groups, where each group deliberated on the topics given to them and later made presentations on topics ranging from 'breaking barriers in education', 'mental health and well-being', 'leadership and representation', and 'addressing gender-based challenges in school'. The counselors shared different experiences they had with their students, including sexual abuse, mostly from relatives, early and forced marriage, social norms affecting girls, prioritizing the boy child over the girl in the home, amongst others. The counselors developed an action plan to implement in their respective schools to address these issues and ensure the school is a safe space for the girls to learn and thrive. The counselors also stressed the fact that parents need to pay better attention to their girls' well-being. ADDA is committed to reducing #SRGBV and promoting the rights of women and young girls. ADDA will monitor the implementation of the action plan and work with schools to provide a safe space for girls to thrive. #AccelerateAction #ForWomenAndGirls #IWD2025 #CounselingInSchool #EducationInGombe #GirlChildEducation
